Promote Your Business Online

Tuesday, January 13th, 2009

The internet is a great place to promote your business.  Regardless of what type of business you have, when you promote your business online you can increase traffic in hopes to increase sales.  There are a number of ways to promote your business whether it is through social networking sites or your own website.  Social network sites help you build a database of fans and patrons of your business.  The great thing about a lot of social net working sites is you can link your social networking sites to your site to help promote your site.

When you promote your business online, you can also grow your fan base and patrons when friends of those patrons see that they love your business.  When you have your business website built out, you can have Yahoo!, MSN Live, and Google promote your business site.  With paid advertising or organic searches, users can type in specific keywords and see your site as a potential business that can offer their services or goods.  Having a business space that promotes your business is another great way to help your business grow and flourish.

Have Yahoo! and Google Promote Your Business

Tuesday, January 13th, 2009

Having a website is one thing but what use is it if no one can find your site?   Your website can be a great selling space to have in place of banners and flyers that will eventually end up in the garbage.  When you have Yahoo! and Google promote your business you are getting users who are actively searching for your type of product.  This is more worthwhile than having every car in the parking lot filled with flyers that will end up as origami or their scratch pad.  That’s money down the drain.

There are a number of ways you can have Yahoo!, MSN Live and Google promote your business.  You can purchase marketing and advertising space with each search engine so that when people type in keywords, show up as an option.  Then and only then will you be charged advertising fees.  That’s much better than having your promoting your business with flyers.  Paper and ink cost a lot of money and are a one time deal.  You obviously can’t go back to those cars and ask them for your flyer back so you can reuse it.  When finding out how to promote you r business, your best bet is search engines.  If anything that should be one of the top advertising campaigns you set up for your business.

Are Billboards a Good Way to Promote Your Website or Business?

Tuesday, January 13th, 2009

You see it all time. You’re driving or stuck in rush hour and see that billboard advertising anything from hair products to music.  You try and keep a mental note about that certain product but with everyone’s busy schedule, the majority of the time you forget to check them out.  Plus when you are searching the internet about those products, you find business and websites that show up in search engine results and resort to them instead of that business advertising their business on a billboard.

Despite what many may think, billboards are not a good way to promote your website or business.  They may have been a good idea in the past when the internet was not what it is now, but that has changed drastically.  Nowadays, many people turn to the internet on their phone or home computer to see business and websites that help supply them with products or information.  Billboards are at a disadvantage because you are limited to who drives on that freeway.  On top of that, your conversion rate is very slim.  Many of those commuters are not actively searching for your business.  With billboard advertising you are hoping that people keep your ad in mind when they need services like yours.  That is why it is important to promote your website or business online to users who really want to use your service.  You and your website will be better off plus your advertising dollars will be better spent.

Using News Aggregators to Promote Your Blog

Tuesday, January 13th, 2009

Blogs have become a way for the everyday person to report on news they experience first hand, write reviews or just express themselves for other people to read.  Blogs are a fun way to get your opinion out there and many blogs have followers and fellow bloggers that flock to the site to see what the author has to say.  If are an aspiring blogger or hope to grow your fan base there are several things you can do to promote your blog.  News aggregators are a good way to get your blog seen by more people.   You can have news aggregators promote your website or blog by submitting your blog entries to their database of news and blogs.

Many users use these sites to easily filter through blogs and news that they want to read instead of visiting each site or blog on their own.  There are many sites that explain how to promote your blog through these news aggregators.  Another way to have people visit your blog more often is to offer them the ability to subscribe through e-mail or RSS feeds so they are instantly notified of a new blog entry.  If a new reader visits your blog and likes what they read, they will be more inclined to visit once they get word of a new blog instead of constantly checking back for new entries.  News aggregators are just another way you can help promote your blog and collect readers.

Needless to say everyone is watching their money during these tough times.  But many businesses are torn between saving money or put more money into the business to become more aggressive.  Instead of marketing a business on all fronts, it seems like many businesses are deciding how to promote their business while still being cost effective and which avenues are the most effective.

How Search Engines Help You Grow Your Business

Friday, November 14th, 2008

Search engines can help grow your business in a number of ways and help you promote your products and services online.  However, I think it is important for people to understand how a search engine works and how you can make your site more search engine friendly.

What is a Search Engine?
When describing a search engine, most people will have different answers.  Some people consider search engines a place where they can find information easily.  Others might refer to search engines as a place that houses and indexes information about the web.  If you are a more technical mind you might describe a search engine as a big massive database application.  And finally, if you are more mathematically inclined, your answer might include a discussion on the algorithmic characteristics of search results.  What ever your definition, all of the above are absolutely correct.

How Can a Search Engine Help Me Grow My Business?
Search engines can help you grow your business in a number of different ways.  The biggest reason to use search engines to grow your business is for the increase in traffic you will get from people clicking on search results and being taken to your website or e-commerce store.  This increase in traffic should lead to a number of positive things such as increases in telephone calls, more leads and ultimately more orders and revenue.  Additionally, there is a subconscious factor that some people might agree with or not.  I believe that by having your site consistently ranked for the main keywords and longer tail keywords, your customers and clients will begin to consider you a huge resource and since Google or Yahoo keep showing your site in their results, it acts like a vote that they think you are the very best at whatever is being searched for.

How Does a Search Engine Work?
The way that a search engine finds your site is through a small program which scours the internet for information.  These programs are sometimes called "spiders".  I also have heard them referred to as "robots" and "crawlers" as well.  However, all of these names describe exactly the same program or process.  These "spiders" work around the clock traversing the web for new content and websites, collecting information, and sending it back to the search engines for analysis.

How Do I Get My Website to Show Up in a Search Engine?
There are a number of ways to get your site to show up in a search engine.  The most efficient way is to have other sites link to yours.  Getting press about your business or website and having it submitted to national PR agencies is also very beneficial.  You can also submit your website directly to the search engines to let them know about your site and what it is all about.  Ideally, you want to use all avenues to help broadcast your website across the web and you want to do this constantly.

What is the Difference Between Paid Placement and Organic Placement?
The way that your site shows up when someone types in a specific keyword can be done in one of two ways.  The first is by paying the search engines to have your site show up.  This process is called pay-per-click (PPC) or cost-per-click (CPC).  However, both mean and act in the same way.  Paid search results show up usually on the top and righthand sides of a search engine results page (SERP).  Every time your website appears and someone clicks on it, it costs you a certain amount of money.  There is another way to drive traffic to your site and that is done through the organic results.  Organic results are the list of sites that appear after someone has typed in the keyword.  Organic results are different from paid results in that they don’t cost you anything when people click on the link to your website.  And organic results (if implemented the right way), will also show up across multiple search engines whereas the paid results will only show up where you are paying for them.

In closing, search engines are powerful platforms to help grow your business and promote your products and services online.  I encourage each of you to get out there and make sure that your site looks professional and clean and adheres to all of the search engine standards that are out there today!

Effective Marketing Strategies Require Five Key Considerations

Friday, October 31st, 2008

If you are trying to get your ducks in the row for a marketing strategy for your company or business, there are five key considerations to any successful marketing campaign.

  1. You Need a Good Product to Market. This may seem like a no-brainer, but good advertising relies on good products. Consider that no matter how well a product is marketed, if it has the reputation of being a bad product, no amount of marketing will help sell it. For example, remember the “New Coke” introduced in 1985 by the Coca Cola Company? They spent huge amounts of money rolling this new product out, but ultimately it was a huge failure. Why?  There are many speculations about it, but the bottom line is that people did not think the new product was good, so it tanked. Lesson number one for all businesses and companies trying to introduce their new product into the market: ensure you have a good product to sell and it will help sell itself.
  2. Go with Practical Advertising and Keep it Relevant. Think about the effective marketing you see with widely known and successful companies. Their advertising doesn’t focus on the product or a history that people don’t care about, so much on how it meets the needs of consumers. Consider how many prescription medicine TV advertisements focus on how much better your life will be if you have this medication versus if you do not. The focus is not so much on the medicine itself, but the lifestyle and happiness of the individuals in the commercial as a direct result of the medicine. Know your demographic and shoot for marketing your product so that it is meeting a need consumers have.
  3. Keep Your Online Marketing Simple. Consider how easy your website is to use for the average person. You may notice there are websites out there that spend a lot of money to bedazzle with flash design, games, or other intriguing features to grab attention, but this marketing method is detrimental in the end. It may be surprising, but clear, succinct, and highly relevant content is what will attract customers. Think about like this: you can watch an action movie with a lot of stunts, explosions, and special effects but if it doesn’t have a good storyline you don’t get drawn into it. The other side of the coin is the non-flashy films that have solid storylines, good dialogue and character development that is so well written and acted that they win Oscars. You want your website to be the equivalent of this kind of film.
  4. Not all Publicity is Good. Some people think that any publicity is good publicity, but this is not true if it’s negative press. Some businesses support this creed, and may attempt to leverage a sensitive or negative situation to get attention from consumers, but if the company’s integrity is questioned, is it really good publicity? You don’t want your customers to have a negative opinion of your business, so remember that ultimately you don’t want to sacrifice your good name for a little publicity.
  5. Expand on Successful Product Ideas. If you come up with a good idea or a good product that consumers like, don’t be afraid to expand on it. Remember the first “Dummies” book that came out? Dan Gookin had a great idea to write a “DOS for Dummies” book in 1991, and that book sold so well and was so popular, that these instruction manuals “for dummies” have been expanded into several categories and are translated into several different languages. If you have a great idea about one product for your business, consider ways that you can expand on it.
